Training Programs

Between 1995 and 2000, the LEC has supported a diversity of field ecology courses for the University of Tulear with funding from the Andrew Lees Trust UK.
The overall objective of the LEC is "to train competent, responsible, and operational human resources at the regional level that can contribute to the management of natural ecosystems". To this end, the LEC has already developed several accredited University level courses and training programmes. The programme is tailored to provide for the future human resources needs of national institutions and programmes as well as regional NGOs. The themes for training include ecology, conservation biology, rural development, communication and animation, and community based management of natural resources.

WWF "in house" technical staff as well as national level consultants assist the LEC with this activity. Courses are provided, or are in preparation, on the following topics:

  • Environmental policy in Madagascar
  • Political ecology
  • Ecology of the south
  • Biogeography of Madagascar
  • The environment and the Malagasy culture
  • Rural development based on ecosystem equilibrium
  • Addressing root causes for biodiversity loss
  • Communication and animation
  • Community based natural resources management
  • Natural resources management planning
  • Prevention and reduction of pollution
  • English relative to environmental themes
  • French relative to environmental themes
